I cannot stop obsessing over Deepika Padukone, she is basically my Britney circa 2000 - official Queen. I love Deepika not only because of her acting but because she encompasses everything I want from Bollywood: classic beauty with a new age, liberal personality that challenges taboos.
I think Bollywood has been systematically problematic in promoting the Eurocentric ideal of beauty that is a wonderful remnant of colonialism - when our British Memsaabs reigned supreme over us lowly, "dusky" darkies. It's refreshing to see a woman who represents women like me - being from a Mahajir (and Pashtun) background, my heritage is Indian and I really hope to visit the country and see my grandmother's home and old haunts. I think that is the reason I enjoy loud, colorful, cultural Bollywood movies that stay organic - an element which is omnipresent in the roles Deepika chooses.
I did a Piku inspired look...unfortunately I forgot to switch lenses and the quality isn't great, but if you catch my video, I've got a complete look towards the end.
I paired this fully embroidered kurti with a Punjabi shalwar - which has a LOT of volume - and kept the accessories simple, I didn't want to venture into costumey so I wasn't overtly ethnic with my jewelry.
I did a quick Get Ready with Me video - check it out and spoke a little about my own experiences with shadeism (the discrimination of a person based on how dark their skin tone is). I think we're definitely beginning to speak up, within the South Asian diaspora, against the promotion of the idea that light skin is superior in any way. Let me know your thoughts!
Nice look! The video is great, love this article :)
