Fashion is constantly changing, whats in today is out tomorrow. Or that's what they [the fashion houses] will have you believe! In fact, fashion is just like evolution, it just developes from a previously concieved idea.
Dating back to even, pre-historic times, when cavemen decided they liked what the wild beasts were sporting and had to have the look for themselves! I have it on excellent authority, that the Haute Couture Caves quickly set out to hunt the leopards, tigers and whatever else animals were alive back then. Slowly but surely, this trend of donning animal skins translated to the mass market and still remains prevalent to this day! Seriously. Talk about recycling.
Thru copious amounts of research and tedious analyzing I have traced the main source of this trend, heavily favoured by the likes of Gwen Stefani, Queen Latifah and at times, myself.
In the Stone Age, Fred Flintstone, a crane operator in a rock quarry, was featured alongside his family in a sitcom style reality show.
Fred, was primarily adorned in a signature outfit, that has now made him not only a fashion icon but a constant source of inspiration for fashionistas, everywhere.

Fred's look was comprised of a sabertooth leopard [print] shift with a astounding bright blue tie to complement the outfit. Sabertooths are now extinct, but gladly a line of their descendants, the modern day, regular teeth [read:boring] leopard can still be hunted [just watch out for those crazy PETA people. They'll douse you with pig's blood! Or was that the crazy hormonal teens from Carrie?].
As for completing Fred's look, being a caveman, essentially meant no foot wear, as was the style in those days. No Man-Olos, if you catch my drift.
Although, starlettes today have refrained from blatantly copying Fred's style [no one but, Cameron Diaz or Britney goes barefoot anymore, wimps!] they've clearly taken it into consideration innumerable times.

And while some, like your truly, take the somewhat questionable dardevil route of getting fully decked out in an animal print dress...

Mel "Scary" Spice, let's it all hang out.
Left: Gwen Stefani, Right: Me
Others like, Victoria Beckham take the safe bet and choose a funky little accesory, in this case the Marc Jacob's bag...

Also known as Posh, a style icon in her own right...seriously, from her hair/makeup to her outfits, shoes, accesories and the cherry on top of the proverbial cake...her husband...she really knowns how to step out in style.
So, we see how man...ok, woman...has taken the culture of her ancestors and carried it thru to today. Be it inspired by a leopard, zebra or a toucan bird...it's worth appreciating. It's not just fashion...it's a homage to our olden way of life!

ReplyDeleteI love animal print (but not on myself). You totally rock this look! I should show this to my boyfriend who hates leopard print with a passion. I think I might need to find a way to work it in, because it seems like leopard always finds its way back in style, it seems very classic for being so crazy ;)
ReplyDeleteHilarious. I am actually a big fan of animal print. Those boys do tend to growl when I wear it...
